What's New In The World Of Technology

Take a look at some technological inventions and how they have affected us today.

What Has Advancing Technology Done For Us?

The way we communicate today has become dependent on technology, and that dependency increases as technology advances. Advanced technology has created an interconnected world where anyone can share with anyone. People no longer have to wait days for their messages to reach their intended sender, they can now send and receive messages instantly. Though technology has had many positive impacts on our society it has had just as many negative impacts on society.  For this post, I want to take a look at some very popular developments in technology and the impacts that they have had on our society.

The Television

The first mechanical television system was created by John Logie Baird, a Scottish engineer. He created what was known as "Nipkow disk" which captured images and converted them to electric signals. The first public demonstration of this was held in Londen in 1925. After this invention scientists and engineers didn't waste time building off the idea. The first TV, as we think of them today, was credited to a man from Idaho by the name of Philo Farnsworth. But a man by the name of Vladimir Zworykin had a helping hand in Farnsworth idea and development.
This development brought the idea of movies, tv shows, talk shows, and documentaries into the light. People started creating forms of entertainment for each other. A big positive impact of tvs was the ability for people to be able to watch the news at home without having to go out and get a newspaper. While the TV had so many positive impacts, one thing that doesn't sit right with me is how TV has encouraged people to stay indoors and watch the TV all day. "Dindge watching" is a term that was created by the new generation to describe hours of sitting down to watch a show or movie. This is terrible for your health and it's something that so many people do every weekend.

Facebook

Facebook was invented by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. These were all students at Harvard University looking to create a social platform for the students to use. I was quite surprised to learn that prior to Facebook this same group of friends made a website that would put two female students' faces together and people could vote on who was prettier. While Facebook is a place to share life updates with your friends and join communities of people who share the same interest as you, Facebook is a breeding place for misinformation. Facebook can't seem to keep itself out of the headline, and it has now gotten to the point where people are starting to ditch the platform. Between selling user data to 3rd party programs and spreading false information through the multitude of fake accounts, Facebook has a terrible reputation today. I once saw a documentary discussing how there were actual businesses of people who would create fake accounts to make posts to either increase someone's image or hurt an opponent's image.

YouTube

YouTube was invited in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. I found it very funny that the first video ever uploaded on YouTube was a video of the CEO's dog. YouTube is something that I think will always be around no matter how much we develop as a society. YouTube has created easy access to documentaries, educational videos, entertainment, and more. YouTube is something you can watch on TVs, Ipads, Phones, and Computers. While I think that it has had many important positive impacts on the world and society, the only negative impact that I have encountered is that it has begun to encourage young people to not go to school. Many students don't see the purpose in paying to go to classes where they easily look up how to do something on YouTube and learn that way.

Bringing It Back Together

Technology has had such an impact on our society and has made massive strides in bringing us together as people. I want to close this post off with a question for pondering...

"Has technology made us lazy as a society?"
