Online Influencers And Their Impact On Society and Communication
Who Are Online Influencers?
An influencer, as defined by a dictionary, is a person who inspires or guides the actions of others. Often specifically a person who is able to generate interest in something by posting about it on social media. An influencer in my opinion is someone who uses social media to encourage viewers to think and act in certain ways. There are multiple types of influencers. If I had to put influencers into categories there would be four kinds of influencers. The first type of influencer would be product/service influencers. These influencers use their platforms to entice you to buy a certain product or to buy from a certain brand. Sometimes you can hear these influencers called ambassadors. They are often paid by companies to do what they do. Then you have political influencers. Their main objective is to push certain political agendas and ideals onto their viewers. Often time political influencers are very biased and lean heavily to one side. They are often paid by campaign supporters and managers. The next category is lifestyle influencers. These influencers are the most common on social media. These influencers try to push body positivity, mental health, goal mindsets, and more. These influencers are often paid based on their views on the platforms that they post on. The last form of influencer is the intentional influencer. People who just make videos or post about their thoughts and feelings end up making a huge following of viewers. These are the most dangerous influencers.
Are Influencers Good For Society?
Influencers are not anything new to society. The first forms of influencers can be dated back to the ancient roman times when gladiators fought in the colosseum. What's newer today is the online aspect of being an influencer. The biggest benefactor from influencers is businesses. They can pay people to help influence consumers to buy their products. Another positive impact of influencers is the ability to educate young audiences about topics like body positivity and about the news around the world. Data shows us that the young generation is all over influencer platforms like Tik Tok, YouTube, and Instagram. When they see these influencers who are sharing information about news stories and more it helps educate them.
Are Influencers Bad For Society?
While influencers do their best to spread positivity they don't always promote the best ideas. Sometimes people will say what they are paid to say even if it isn't always true. You often come across this the most with political influencers. Political influencers usually spend most of their time bad-mouthing the opposing view. This often creates a negative environment online. Online influencers are also credited with spreading a large amount of misinformation. Not only do they spread misinformation but they also create false expectations for what certain aspects of life are like. In their attempts to spread positivity they often only show the positive and happy stiff about their life. What they often time don't show is the struggles they face and the hard work they put into everything. Sometimes people blindly follow influencers while never really checking the facts and it puts people into bad scenarios.
